Frieze Seoul at MCM HAUS

In honor of the global art fair Frieze’s first arrival in Seoul, MCM showcased a multi-artist exhibition combining culture, art, and fashion at the flagship Cheongdam store, MCM HAUS.

From Berlin to Seoul

Following its successful premier at Berlin’s Gallery Weekend, the Cognac Visetos Monogram DJ case – created by MCM in collaboration with artist Johannes Wohnseifer – journeyed to Seoul for display at MCM HAUS.

Inspired by the ‘wunderkammer’ (‘cabinet of curiosities’), the case is packed with mementos and souvenirs from both Wohnseifer and MCM, referencing Haus history in culture, craftsmanship, and the arts. Its contents include an unreleased track by Schaeben & Voss, a giraffe – one of the artist’s best-loved animals – and designs from historic MCM catalogues.

Just like MCM, Wohnseifer is known for capturing the zeitgeist, with the Cologne-based artist specializing in mixed media – including collage, painting, photography, sculpture, and installation art. Wohseifer’s work references artistic and design history while reflecting on contemporary life as reflected through mass media.

A Journey to Infinity

The transformation of MCM HAUS into an art space featured the latest and most iconic collections from the brand, while the upper floor featured a group exhibition composed of internationally-established artists. To top it all off, leading Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa set up an art installation, integrating MCM’s AW22 collection into his work.

Picking up on the theme of our AW22 collection – titled ‘Rebuild, Remake, Reform’ – Choi Jeong Hwa’s work ‘Journey to Infinity’ explores this circular framework, linking the past and future through moments of everyday life in an infinite cycle of death and rebirth, expressing the unending interconnection of human relationships.
